Alabama Rot in Dogs

Alabama Rot is a rare but serious disease affecting dogs and it's important for every pet parent to know the signs and take preventative measures.

As a dog owner, keeping our companions healthy and happy is our top priority. However, there are some diseases that can pose a serious threat to our pets, one of which is Alabama Rot.

This mysterious and potentially fatal condition has been on the rise in recent years, causing concern among veterinarians and pet owners alike.

What is Alabama Rot?

Alabama Rot is a rare but serious disease that affects dogs. It was first discovered in the United States in the 1980's, primarily in Greyhounds. However, it is now well known in the UK since recent years, where cases have been reported across the country.

Symptoms of Alabama Rot:

  • Painful skin lesions
  • Sores
  • Swelling
  • Red patches
  • Ulcers
  • Skin defects
  • Excessive licking

These are typically found on the paws, legs, chest, abdomen or face.

In later stages (sometimes after only 3 days), affected dogs may experience signs of kidney failure, such as: decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy, increased thirst and urination, pale gums or mouth ulcers.

Cause of Alabama Rot:

The exact cause of Alabama Rot remains unknown, which makes it challenging to prevent and treat efficiently. However, it's thought that the majority of dog's treated for Alabama Rot had recently walked in muddy and/or woodland areas.

Protecting your dog from Alabama Rot:

There is no guaranteed way to prevent Alabama Rot while the cause is unknown, however there are some steps you can take to minimise the risk:
  1. Keep your dog away from extremely muddy areas.
  2. Wash and dry your dog's paws and legs thoroughly after muddy or wet walks, as this may help remove any potential contaminants.
  3. Monitor your dog closely for any signs of skin lesions or changes in behaviour and seek veterinary attention promptly if you notice anything unusual.
  4. Stay informed about reported cases of Alabama Rot in your area and consult with your veterinarian for guidance on additional preventive measures.
